Photo #1: April's arm
Photo #2: Ian's face
Can you guess what happened? Or at least come up with a clever explanation? Write your stories in the comments section. Winners will be judged on creativity and originality by members of the Young family. Then, maybe we'll tell you what REALLY happened (assuming that Megan won't mind typing it all since her mother currently lacks the use of her right arm). In addition to fame and glory, the winner(s) will receive an original work of art by Megan. Posts of sympathy also accepted, along with offers of meals, help with housework, etc...

Yikes!!!! I would say a biking accident. I am so sorry for whatever reason it happen.
Love,
Grandma Young
Yuki the dog was riding in the kennel in the rear, as usual. But this time she noticed the door had not been latched, and so she carefully nudged her way out. Curious, cautious, but exuberant as usual, she made one large leap, taking her into the middle row of seats in the Suburban. The kids started screaming and yelling at her, but she was so excited that it only encouraged her.
She was so clever, and wanted everyone to know about it. After one big lick to Ian's face, she decided to check on April to make sure she knew how smart a puppy she really was. One big bound and she was in the front seat next to April. Meanwhile April was turning to the rear seat to see what was going on. The two kind of met in the middle, which kind of put Yuki halfway into the driver's seat. And at 30 mph or so, with a dog leg in the steering wheel, the power pole on the side of the road approached rather rapidly.
When they met, the tangled arm went crunch. The tangled dog went "WOOF", and Ian lurched forward, restrained by his seat belt. He still mooched into the front seat, but it could have been much worse!
Yuki was so proud and pleased. She had saved the family from much more serious injuries. After all, she functioned as an air bag almost, and without her things could have been much worse. She was so proud and happy, that she couldn't understand why they were all yelling at her. She kept wagging what was left of her tail, however. They were surely shouting words of praise in their excitement, for just think how bad it could have been had she not been there!
Grandpa Young, as related by Yuki!
A bike accident for which one? Ian
Victims of yet another freak snowstorm? Ian wanted to rush outside without his coat, and April ran after him. Ian began slipping on some ice and April tried to catch him. She broke his fall with her arm, and he landed with just a scratch.
For more creativity, either pirates or space aliens were involved, and some top secret maps, and perhaps excessive use of ray guns.
Ehh...something involving a life-threatening situation -- April hanging off a cliff by one arm, perhaps? And as Ian hauled her with his muscle power back to solid ground, April, errr...broke her arm, and Ian scraped his eye. Obviously.
I'm going to guess a fall from an ATV chasing down bears. April was driving and had to jump ship suddenly; Ian was behind and followed suit though he only ended up with a scratched face instead of a broken arm. This is not my most reasonable guess but it sounds like the most fun. My second guess would be a fall while trying to build a tree house.
I'm sorry in any case; what a nuisance to be in a cast--not to mention pain!
I am guessing that April recruited the children to help save the apricots from the spring freeze. Erin was assigned the smallest tree, Ian the middlest tree, Megan the largest tree, and Yuki was keeping tabs on them all.
Suddenly, a gigantic icicle fell from the topmost branch of Ian's tree. Yuki barked an alarm and April, with great motherly love, came flying in front of Ian to knock him out of the way of the icicle, breaking her arm and mangling Ian's face in the process.
At that point, they gave up on saving the trees and now they have a broken arm, damaged face, and no apricot jam. But think how much worse it could have been: that icicle could have gone right through Ian's head.
Though I also like Randy's version.
You guys are all complicating things far beyond what's necessary. Ian was simply extending his karate training to include Urban Ninja techniques. See here for reference. April had been walking up the stairs in the park, holding on to the hand rail since it was conveniently there and she's so safety-minded. Ian, meanwhile, had just taken a flying leap from 20 feet up in a nearby tree. He'd planned on using that handrail to swing up and launch himself through the tire swing on the playground. April placed her hand on the rail just as Ian reached for it, causing him to break his fall on her arm instead. Obviously that threw off his balance mid-air, causing him to miss the center of the tire swing and scrape his face along the side instead.
Needless to say, Ian is banned from further Urban Ninja adventuring until he finishes all his mom's chores around the house.
It all happened on a Tuesday. Tuesday’s are not good days! Beware the Tuesdays!
Ian, flush with success after earning his green belt, was inspired to practice even more diligently and (to his chagrin, he will soon realize) enthusiastically. He was determined to further master the 'kihon' and learn the new 'kata'
(I hope I get bonus points for that...) without delay- green isn't really his color, you see; he wanted to advance to the more flattering purple belt. So, as he could not stay at his 'dojo' all day long, and he could not bring his 'sensei' home with him, he was forced to practice 'kumite' - or sparring (I am so doing my research!) with any one/thing he could find around his home.
With April, Megan and Erin busy and Kevin gone to work, Ian wandered into the yard, yearning to hit something. Just then, he spied a bird house conveniently hanging from a tree. "Oh joy and rapture", he exclaimed. "What a perfectly lovely thing to strike!"
It's a shame he didn't think about the bird living inside... She was not too pleased about her home being assaulted so violently. So she did what any bird would do- she fought back. Poor Ian was so surprised at the sudden emergence of a blue jay with a vendetta that it was a full 3 seconds before he could run away in terror.
Do you have any idea how much damage a blue jay can do to a face in 3 seconds? Judging by Ian’s poor face the answer seems clear- plenty.
Meanwhile-
April was injured not because she was hitting things, but because she’s pregnant. Most people are familiar with ‘nesting’- when a pregnant woman is highly motivated to get hearth and home ready for a new baby. Most people are also familiar with ‘spring cleaning’- a yearly ritual of cleaning every nook and cranny and of obsessive organizing and tidying.
The typical spring cleaning that goes on annually was increased exponentially this year by the added hormonal enthusiasm of her nesting syndrome, so she decided to tackle- The Greenhouse. Duhn duhn duhn….
She just could not stand the thought of bringing another baby into a home with a leaky roof. On a greenhouse. In the backyard. Where the baby will *not* be living. (Hormones, remember?)
So there she was, minding her own business, crawling around on the top of the greenhouse patching holes, when she heard Ian screaming something about a rogue bird. She stood up, naturally alarmed at the sound of her offspring in obvious distress, only to see a bird with a maniacal glint in its eye flying right at her. She had only a split second to make a choice- stand and fight or stop, drop and roll. Being a sensible and kind woman, she decided that it would be wrong to harm a little bird, even if it did look like it was going to eat her, so she chose to stop, drop and roll. Unfortunately, she forgot that she was 10 feet above the ground and that there was not much room to roll.
She did manage to escape from the Blue Jay of Destruction, but she did not escape Newton’s law of gravity and she fell to the ground, breaking her arm in the process.
The greenhouse remains un-thatched and the bird feeders are intentionally empty.
p.s. The Blue Jay of Destruction has not been seen since that fateful day, though there have been rumors of a sighting in Topeka, Kansas.
we were deliberating over dinner last night as to what the causes of the injuries could be. we thought fishing accident (april got bit by a big carp and ian was trying valiantly to reel it in and scraped himself with the fishing pole); ian was practicing his new karate moves and accidentally broke his mother's arm and she accidentally scraped his face in self-defense; and then maybe it was a dumpster-diving accident--i know another round of student-exodus is underway so maybe you fell and ian somehow was injured in the process too? man, my curiosity is peaked!
